I am a Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years experience working in NHS settings, and10 years as a fully qualified practitioner. I am also fully trained in EMDR.

What is a Clinical Psychologist?
Clinical psychologists have completed a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy), which combines academic learning with extensive supervised clinical placements across various settings. Our training equips us to work with a wide range of psychological difficulties, tailoring therapeutic approaches to best suit the needs of each individual.

About Me
I qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 2014 from Sheffield University and since then have lived and worked around the country, moving back to Merseyside in 2022.
I am an experienced Clinical Psychologist and I have developed skills in working with a wide variety of difficulties, including depression and low mood, anxiety difficulties (for example panic attacks, social anxiety or health anxiety), bereavement and loss. I am also particularly passionate about supporting people who have experienced trauma, this may be in the context of childhood experiences, or events in adulthood like accidents, injuries or health problems.
A big focus of my career has been on working with people with physical health difficulties. I have worked in a wide range of NHS settings, for example, with people experiencing long-term pain, those living with and beyond cancer, people diagnosed with heart conditions and individuals affected by appearance-related distress related to skin conditions or scars. I am also particularly interested in supporting people who have experienced trauma in relation to challenging medical events, diagnoses or treatment, or ongoing health struggles and pain.

How I Work

I understand that reaching out for support can feel daunting. We will go at a pace that feels right for you and I will provide a safe space where you can feel heard and understood.
We will start by working together to build an understanding of your current difficulties. This will involve gathering information about relevant past experiences and coping strategies as well as yourcurrent thoughts, feelings, behaviours and any physical health issues. This will help us plan a treatment approach which ultimately aims to help you to engage with your life in a meaningful way despite the challenges you are facing.

Therapeutic Approaches
I use a variety of evidence based therapeutic approaches to best meet your needs. I am fully trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). I also use cognitive behavioural and acceptance based approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulnessbased approaches, and Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT).

What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a type of therapy that helps people process traumatic memories. It’s based on the idea that when a traumatic memory is not fully processed, it can stay "stuck" in the brain, causing emotional distress that can continue many years after the event or experiences have occurred.
There are a number of phases in EMDR treatment, however a key element is the use of guided eye movements or other types of bilateral stimulation (like tapping or sounds) while the person recalls distressing memories. This process is thought to help the brain reprocess these memories, making them less intense and easier to manage emotionally in the here and now.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recognised EMDR as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD. It is also used for a wide range of other emotional and psychological difficulties, especially when past experiences are contributing to current distress. There is also emerging evidence for its use in helping people living with long term pain.

Areas of difficulty I can help with

I have particular experience in supporting people dealing with:
• Trauma (PTSD): for example in relation to distressing life events, accidents / injuries, challenging medical events, diagnoses or treatments, ongoing physical health difficulties.

• Depression and low mood.
• Anxiety difficulties: including coping with uncertainty related to ongoing health problems, health anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety.
• Bereavement and loss: helping individuals cope with loss, whether related to their health, loved ones, or life transitions.
