Mari Obi - Integrative Counsellor & Psychotherapist.

MNCPS (Acc)MSc Counselling. Adults and Young People

About Me

Hello, I’m Mari.

I offer a warm and supportive space for adults and young adults who are beginning to notice how early family dynamics, cultural expectations, or past relationships are shaping how they move through the world today.

You might feel stuck in familiar emotional cycles, unsure why certain relationships feel so hard, or carrying a sense of not quite being “enough.” We’ll take the time to slow down, explore what’s happening underneath, and make sense of your experiences without judgement or pressure to have everything figured out.

I do this work because I’ve been on the other side and I know how life-changing it can be to have a space where you’re truly seen.

I came into counselling through my own experiences of therapy. Working with a therapist who truly changed my life showed me how powerful it is to have a safe, non-judgemental space where you can be fully yourself and develop a deeper understanding of who you are. That experience continues to shape how I show up for my clients: with care, respect, and genuine presence.

My clinical and voluntary experience includes placements with Healthbox CIC, The Mix, and Age UK Wirral, as well as crisis support volunteering with Crisis Text Line and Shout. This work has strengthened my ability to stay calm under pressure and support people experiencing high levels of distress.
Having lived across Switzerland, Japan, Canada, and the UK, I also bring a cross-cultural awareness to my practice and welcome clients who are navigating intercultural or intergenerational dynamics.

My Approach
My approach is collaborative and relational, shaped by person-centred and psychodynamic ways of working. That means our sessions aren’t about me “fixing” you, but about us being curious together. We’ll notice patterns, emotions, and experiences as they show up in your life and in our work together.
I often work with relationship struggles, attachment wounds, family conflict, and anxiety. Sessions are typically open-ended and exploratory, with space to look at both present-day difficulties and the earlier experiences that may sit underneath.

As a therapist, I’m steady, reflective, emotionally attuned, and gently direct. I aim to empathise and normalise your experience while also offering thoughtful challenges when it may support growth. I sometimes share light psychoeducation where helpful, but I don’t set homework.
I hope to offer a space where you might feel heard for the first time and begin to understand yourself with more compassion. At times, this might include checking in with how things feel in your body, especially when it’s difficult to find the right words.
You don’t need to arrive with everything neatly explained, just as you are is enough.
